Studio 92 - Mark Shannon Exhibition
“Sea, Sky and
the Hills Behind”
Mark Shannon
Mark
Shannon arrived at painting in his late twenties and studied under Patrick Moss
a well-respected painter and teacher, after running a successful health
food/bakery in Melbourne.
In
some ways, one could say his move towards painting was inevitable as art and
artists have surrounded him in his life. He is the nephew of renowned Melbourne
artist Michael Shannon; and his mother, Pat, is a highly respected and
accomplished artist. In 1993 he was awarded the Contemporary Art Society painting
prize.
Living
in Apollo Bay provides Mark with endless subject matter from which to draw and
paint. The surrounding hills and ocean views unique to Apollo Bay are captured
in Mark’s distinctive style with oil pastel and acrylic.
Mark’s
exuberant landscapes illustrates his intuitive use of strong form and exciting
colour. He seems to possess an instinctive and enviable pleasure in line and
colour – essentially that which makes us like art in the first place. An
approach that ensures his paintings fill a room with joy and colour.
The
liveliness and energy that Mark inject into his landscapes has become a release
for the physical limitations he now experiences. His limited mobility has led
to a move in to residential care. Mark takes comfort in depicting landscapes
with an expression of feeling that he can now only capture as an onlooker.
